“The Gale NewsVault enables members of Yarra Plenty Regional Library to access historical information at their fingertips.
With many of our customers researching their family history in the UK, Yarra Plenty Regional Library’s subscription to the Gale News Vault enables them to search and access historical newspapers from there. Newspapers provide information that may not be able to be found in other resources, such as that of a more personal nature. It can confirm and expand on stories handed down, or uncover stories that have long been forgotten.
Newspapers provide information from birth and death announcements to advertisements of business activity, bankruptcy and disposal of property to reports of criminal activity, Shipping news, obituaries and more. This information can add colour to a life that is more than dates and expand a timeline to include the context in which a life was lived, from epidemics to financial hard times.
The search facility with links to the digitised image enables researchers to easily access information. Our remote access facility is especially beneficial to our customers as they visit and browse our website before accessing the link to search at home at their own convenience.
I often encourage our customers to explore this e-resource because they don’t know what they may find till they start searching.”

“I have found the NewsVault very helpful and a great resource in finding information to add to my Family History records. It greatly helps to put flesh on the bones of the families and be aware of things that were happening in their life time.”
Beryl (Yarra Plenty Regional Library member), March 2016
