"With 292 entries, Animal Sciences is one of several new sets in The Macmillan Science Library. Other recent titles include Plant Sciences and Biology and all use a multi-volume, 4-color format to introduce students to the basic concepts, history and issues of specific disciplines in the sciences. This disciplinary approach means that this tool allows students to learn more about particular branches of study, possible careers and methods in the animal sciences. Biographical entries on important scientists introduce the history of zoology. Articles specific to particular types ofanimals are relatively infrequent and are usually confined to the chief orders of animals, not particular species. The prehistoric world is systematically covered in entries on each geologic period. The effect of humans on the animal world is treated in some detail, from the ethics of animal testing and farming to pesticides and environmental degradation. In addition to articles on animal adaptations, diversity and forms, coverage also explores the broader contexts of life with entries on biomass, cells, genetics and continental drift. As an aid to students, every volume includes a glossary, a brief timeline, classification schemes and separate volume indexes. Animal Sciences will serve school and public libraries." -- Lawrence Looks at Books (June 2001)
