Interested in becoming Nelson Primary's newest writer? 

Your students have the opportunity to become a published author! 

Nelson Primary, in partnership with AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies) are proud to announce we will be publishing an exciting new series, Our Land, Our Stories. It is a whole-school series exploring the concepts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and histories. The series includes rare and historically important photos, artwork and audio-visual resources with texts and stories written by leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors. 

Competition

Our Land, Our Stories includes reading cards at Lower, Middle and Upper Primary levels. We need your help to publish short texts to be written by Indigenous students ages 5 to 8 years old. 

We wish to publish five cards that are about the special people in the students life – those people that the student has a close connection to. 

They include: 

• Card 1: My Mum, My Dad 
• Card 2: My Brother, My Sister
• Card 3: My Aunty, My Uncle 
• Card 4: My Nana, My Granddad 
• Card 5: My Teacher

Students can choose to write about any of these people in their lives. They can describe what he/she is like, the things they do, and why that person is special to them. We are also trying to explore the idea of kinship and cultural connectedness. 

How to enter

1. Download the entry form and refer to the Terms & Conditions upon entry. Scroll to the top of the page to download both forms.
2. The competition is for an Indigenous series so only Indigenous students (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) need enter. 
3. The word limit is to be up to 80 words. 
4. If possible, please submit a photo of the person that is being described, ideally with the student. The photo can be informal and can be taken with a phone. (All people in the photos will need to provide their permission for their image to be published.)
5. Submit your entry and the photo to aust.nelsonprimary@cengage.com by Thursday, 15 August 2018 5pm. AEST. We will accept mailed entries, send them to:

Winners 

All winners will receive: 

• An author's fee of $150 and their writing will be published in Our Land, Our Stories. 
• An author's contract from Nelson Cengage. (The contract will need to be counter-signed by the child's parent/guardian.)
• A copy of the printed card when published and the school will receive the complete Our Land, Our Stories resource.
