A Focus on Levelled Texts and Guided Reading
This workshop focuses on best practice in the teaching of literacy – that is to ensure we have the right book in the hands of the right child at the right time. We will look at organising Guided Reading groups and instruction during oral reading of levelled text.
We will unpack the matching of children to text using the Benchmarking process. Then we will explore taking Reading Records and full analysis of recorded reading behaviours.
This session is for any teacher who would like to refresh their skills in the taking, analysis and use of levelled text. It will also be instructional and supportive for Graduate teachers and those newly returning to the profession.
Session Outline:
- Structure of the Literacy Block
- The Guided Reading Process
- Taking a Running (or Reading) Record
- Levels of Running Record analysis
- Error analysis: Meaning Structure, Visual
- Visible and invisible actions taken by the reader – decoding, phrasing and fluency, comprehension
- Using a Running Record effectively
Explicitly Teaching Writing with links to NAPLAN
As children are now assessed nationally using criteria based indicators, teachers must explicitly teach students about the text, sentence and word level demands of text.
This session will focus on explicitly teaching children how to structure their writing appropriately to text type. We will examine the elements of greater importance within specific text types in their construction and comprehension. Strong focus will be on linking the explicit teaching of reading to the explicit teaching of writing.
Overall, this practical, hands-on workshop will examine the literacy demands of different text types including structure and language features, and linking these to scaffolding the explicit teaching of writing to students.
Session outline:
- Identifying the features, at the whole text, sentence and word level, of a range of text types
- Focus on Narrative and Persuasive texts in line with NAPLAN 2014 requirements
- The need for all our students to access and manipulate language
- Teaching children the structure of text
- Benchmarking/assessing children’s writing
- Effective strategies to assist students to learn editing skills
- Teaching/Learning activities to develop vocabulary for writing factual texts
- Linking the explicit teaching of reading to the explicit teaching of writing
- This workshop is suitable for all year levels and would be especially beneficial to graduate teachers or teachers re-entering the profession
