Presented by James Ferguson
This session will review the skills which in combination define a student as being a balanced reader: decoding, fluency & phrasing, and reading with comprehension (literal, inferential and response). We will look at how these skills must be explicitly taught to students over all text types, working with differing literacy demands of Imaginative, Informative and Persuasive texts.
Then we will explore matching of children to text, and unpack the Benchmarking process. The taking of Reading Records and the full analysis of the recorded reading behaviours will also be undertaken.
Finally comprehension skill development will be covered through unpacking specific strategies, including scaffolding to deconstruct text, enhancing visual literacy and vocabulary development.
