A comprehensive resource to engage and inspire QCE Design students, Nelson Design for QCE has been written by Andrew Scott and Mike King, both experienced and passionate Queensland design teachers, to explicitly align with new QCAA Design syllabus with a focus on the practical application of design thinking skills to devise and create innovative design solutions.

The new edition of the Nelson Design for QCE series will include two student books - one per year level - to be published this year and next to align with the staggered implementation of the revised QCAA design syllabus. The result is a more focused and tailored approach to each unit to better support students at each stage of their QCE design journey.

The first of the two student books in the series focuses on Units 1 and 2 and has been divided into four sections to help students balance the practical and theoretical aspects of the QCE Design course. Sections 1 and 2 provide students with a designer's toolkit, including a step-by-step guide to undertaking their own design project, with useful tips and tricks as well as detailed advice on visualisation techniques. Sections 3 and 4 introduce students to design theory, including exploring a range of design disciplines and the work of significant designers and design movements.

Clear alignment to the revised QCAA Design Syllabus to ensure correct weighting of content and required depth of study, including coverage of all design disciplines and terminology, and clearer scaffolding and improved navigation.

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the School of Design Queensland University of Technology. In his 36 years of teaching he has been recipient of numerous University awards and external recognition including the Australian Learning and Teaching Council's prestigious award for Teaching excellence (2010) and the QS-Wharton Reimagine Education's Global Education Award (team, 2021). He is committed to developing design education in high schools and was a member of the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority's Expert Writing Team for the 2019 Design Syllabus. Andrew's research interests include user/product emotional attachment and interface design. Other interests include product aesthetics, graphical literacy and information design. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education academy and a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia.

Mike King

Mike King is an experienced Design teacher delivering and developing content in Queensland using the QCAA Senior Design syllabus for St Andrew's Anglican College. Previously Head of Design Technology at the Springfield Anglican College and teacher of Engineering, Industrial Technology Skills and Design and Technology.

Kristen Guthrie

Kristen is an experienced teacher of Visual Communication and Design and a qualified graphic designer. She has been closely involved in the development, teaching and evaluation of the VCE Visual Communication and Design study design since its inception in the VCE curriculum. She has worked in the curriculum development and assessment with VCAA and is passionate about design education.
